ENERGY STAR® for Downlights
What Happened to ENERGY STAR®?
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sunsetted the ENERGY STAR® effective December 31, 2024. They announced, “it is no longer possible to purchase inefficient light bulbs for the majority of of household applications, the EPA has ended the ENERGY STAR program for the most common light fixtures. You may continue to see products packaged with the ENERGY STAR logo on store shelves in early 2025 because the EPA is allowing manufacturers to sell through their remaining stock and minimize waste.”
No more ENERGY STAR® for lighting products?
Not really. The lighting industry convinced EPA that energy efficiency improvements are still possible in downlights. The EPA subsequently relased a limited specification document to qualify downlights for their efficiency logo. So, if you are a downlight manufacturer, you can still get the coveted logo for your product and leverage it for marketing.
